Naperville Cultural Center "Peace through understanding." This motto guides classes offered at the Naperville Cultural Center. While most of the classes center on visual arts (drawing and photography) they have also connected with a local yoga studio to encourage experiencing other cultures' ways of relaxation. http://www.naperculture.org/ Naperville Sister Cities Commission Naperville has two "Sister Cities," Nitra, Slovakia and Pátzcuaro, Mexico. The Sister City Commission is committed to finding business connections connecting Naperville with these cities, but more importantly, making a cultural connection between the residents of the cities. http://www.naperville.il.us/government/board-and-commissions/sister-cities-commission/ Chicago Sister Cities Commission The mission of Chicago's Sister Cities program is to make citizen to citizen connections. Chicago has 28 Sister Cities on 5 continents. On top of this, Chicago is home to many Consulate offices which provide amazing resources for teachers and classrooms. http://chicagosistercities.com/ The Art Institute of Chicago The Art Institute of Chicago has art work from all over the world in its permanent displays. Historical and cultural artifacts from Native American, African, and Asian cultures are accessible for students and teachers to view. Temporary exhibits are archived on their website allowing students to see works or art that they might not have the opportunity to see. These exhibits often center on a specific culture or concept that works for classrooms of all subjects. http://www.artic.edu/ National Museum of Mexican Art Located in Pilsen, this museum not only showcases 3000 years of Mexican art, from both Mexican and Mexican-American artists, it also offers classes and Summer Camp opportunities to children and families in the area. Globallyhttps://teachunicef.org/State Department
So many great resources here, but in my experience, the list of International Schools was incredibly helpful when looking for schools to collaborate with for a videoconferencing project. http://www.state.gov/m/dghr/flo/c21946.htm Ted Talks Ted Talks are short presentations given on a variety of topics. Some are useful for students, others are highly complicated and would confuse intelligent adults. For me, "How I Harnessed the Wind" by William Kamkwamba and "The Danger of a Single Story" by Chimanda Ngozi Adichie are essential to my Africa unit. http://www.ted.com/talks Unicef Unicef has provided leveled materials for many topics involving human rights and recent events. I've used their materials on water and sanitation and plan to use their resources on Syria year. https://teachunicef.org/ Whether collaborating with other teacher or joining in education chats, the power of social media being used for good is amazing. http://www.twitter.com iEARN iEarn connects teachers from all over the world through projects for all grade levels and contents. Another great resource to connect students with their peers around the globe. https://iearn.org/ Project Explorer Project Explorer has created hundreds of short episodes showing students locations are the world. They are leveled from elementary to high school and give students a chance to see a world and people they might never have the chance to visit. http://projectexplorer.org/ Peace Corps The Peace Corps has done an amazing job providing teachers and students with lessons and stories from the work they have done around the world. Their ability to connect volunteers to the classroom through speakers and correspondence is an amazing tool that I hope to use this year. https://www.peacecorps.gov/educators/ Global Standards |
